As we have mentioned before on this blog, many important issues can arise in connection to a divorce. One of these issues is property division. How property is ultimately divided between a divorcing couple can have major impacts on both of the parties to a divorce. Sometimes, couples will reach agreements prior to getting married which are aimed at setting up how property will be divided between the couple in the event of a divorce. These agreements are referred to as prenuptial agreements.

It appears that prenuptial agreements have been increasing in popularity in the United States in recent times. This can be seen in the results of a couple of surveys that have been conducted over the past couple of years regarding prenuptial agreements.

The first survey was conducted by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. In this survey, the organization reportedly asked its members if they had seen any changes in the occurrence of prenuptial agreement signings between 2005 and 2010. Reportedly, 73 percent of respondents to the survey said they saw an increase in the signing of such agreements over the above-mentioned time period.

The second survey was conducted by Harris Interactive in February of 2010. Reportedly, in this survey, single Americans were asked if they would ask a significant other for a prenuptial agreement prior to getting married. Reportedly, almost a third of the single Americans who were surveyed answered that they would ask a significant other for such an agreement.

One wonders what specific causes are behind this trend of prenuptial agreements increasing in popularity in the United States and whether this trend will continue in upcoming years.
